* Chapter renumber, and split ch 17Cliff Click12 days1-3/+10
| | | | | | Renumber chapters 10a, 10b, 11, 12, 13, 14 -> 10, 11, 13, 12, [11,14]. Split ch 17 into a 17a and 17b; shuffle around im/mutable syntax to be consistent, and present it more slowly. THe new immutable syntax is pushed through all later chapters
* Move much of the ISA support to shared codeCliff Click14 days1-0/+2
| | | | The ISA shared handlers here are required for a proper compiler, but contain only trivial bit-massaging operations.
* Move debug printing into shared spaceCliff Click14 days1-0/+1
| | | | Same as the graph viewer, moves a lot of code out of all Nodes

Fix bug setDef does unordered removal from basic blocks. Use cloned constants for spilling. * RA fixes SplitSelfConflict MUST split before uses and after defs. Split global constants across functions Missing find in union; Inserting split after new inserted wrong place Pre-remove null LRGs before color. Bias color hunts through Phis Shorten InstructionSelection. Rename !unified() to leader() AddMemX86 is 2-addr Add CastXXX to preserve register across cast. * Allow a killMap to kill regs. Bugfix scheduler. Bugfix spiller - self-conflict order depended on hashtable iteration order, which depended on System.hashCode which would vary run to run. Improvements to coloring Improvements to spill quality testing * Added flags-kill for XOR * Missing add-deps from fuzzer * Update Chapter14Test.java * remove jukn files * minimal "make release" * Add regkills in IFG building Fix bug LRG union stats Adjust self-conflict splits to be slightly less aggressive In every use-side split, dont split-after-split same block. NewNode is a multi, does not define a register * RA improvements Attempt to commute to keep reg-masks compatible. Clones with kills (x86 XOR killing flags to zero) fail before the flag-def. Bugfix failed to color last lrg. More smarts on picking trivial LRGs during coloring Drop isSplit, add SplitNode Pass regalloc round to all splits for debugging Self-conflict no split on loop backedge. Handle split that gets made goes dead No-reg-mask spilling handles case with many def/uses. Add DivIX86 BrainFuck, MergeSort now allocate as testing * Push l,ast change, unbreak branch * Finally pass the `new [u8]` double-copy test * Fix several ARM reg setup problems Finish Split bypass check ARM: rsp is also a fixed zero, in R31. R0 is a valid register. CallArm prints args, passes TFP for arg selection. Does not return a register. All CallEndARM which DOES return a register. Parms missing tfp for float args. ProjARM after a New missing regs. RetARM missing RPC. Remove hopeful DivIX86 * Bunch of minor arm, risc fixes small constants not cloning * Much ARM fixage One More Go-Round with Better Biased Colors Fix bug picking deepest spills to bias. ARM: remove default 2-address. Fix regmask overflow. Rename some ops to be canonical. * Fixes to release Port does not have to be in a Simple named directory. Call convention is just a string, no enum Missed some tests running RISC, ARM. * Minor release change to allow another foreign port * Allowing non-Simple repo ports Expanding public API slightly so alternative (non-Simple repo) ports can happen. RegMask supports single-bit-set and a long bitmask. Bugfix GCM splitting multiple global constants. Bugfix LCM grabbing a projection vs multi Bugfix RegAlloc when avoiding splitting a clonable Source code in release More timing in CodeGen * Cleanup call ABI presentation Everybody uses the same names, same code shapes * Caller save regs ...not callee save yet * Expose caller save regs * More x86,risc,arm call convention fixes Collect callee and caller save masks (inverts of each other, except for spills). Reorg layout to be closer to each other; remove dead mask definitions; add final keyword * Callee-save registers Callee-save registers and masks and inserting LRGs for same and spilling and picking good spills. Insert CalleeSaveNodes and edges to RetXXXs and RegMasks for those edges. Iterators for regmask. Better printing post-allocation * RegMask supports 128 bits All regs available arm, risc. MergeSort compiles & runs * Fix risc5 compares No flags on risc5. Branch takes 2 inputs (one can be imm12). Float compare only sets a GPR to 0/1. Bool has a isFloat Common risc5 imm-form handling * yank MulIRISC * fix arg flags reg Arm split op can spill flags bugfix RegAlloc 1st real >=64bit reg num * Update Chapter20Test.java * Turn off transpile tests which are broken for some time now * A lot more readme * better flags ListScheduler stalls cmp/jmp in the same block; avoids some flags spills. Make CmpIX86/ARM rematieralize. Bugfix: remove some include x86/risc/arm in other dirs. Canonicalize boilerplate fcn order * regalloc improves Use FltRISC, not clonable requires a spill from int->flt regs. new splits track origin LRG, so later splits in the same pass know what lrg a spilled input is. * RA improvements & fixes Bugfix on split loop-depth computation. Track killmask kills, which are always capacity kills and require more spilling. Rename the riscv registers canonically, so I can tell them part! Definitely no GP or TP in Simple. Node insertAfter bypass a little more conservative. * RA bugfix remove unified failed live ranges * easier access for remote ports debug support * Lots more comments * bugfix infinite peep cycle on (17 ^ 3.14), i.e. bad program * Fix imm12 shift --------- Co-authored-by: Tamás Hadházy <85063808+Hels15@users.noreply.github.com>

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | * Missing idepth for LoopNode * backedge code removing a Parser keep Stop subsuming a node parser yet needs * Missing addDep * LoadNode cloning peep better profit The LoadNode cloning peep cannot clone around a Loop unless its profit on the backedge, otherwise might infinitely clone around backedge. peep: x - (-y) is x+y peep: -(-x) is x * Drop alias from Field Field is intended to be a part of a Type; as such is abstract, immutable, and true for ALL Time and all TypeStructs which have the same field. Drop the alias and struct from Field. Drop field reset. The alias#s are decided in the Parser, and have a lifetime for the compilation unit; the Fields have infinite lifetime. Minor bugfix idepth caching * Remove emacs junk file

Remove DEAD_CTRL, doesn't properly reset between tests. Move keep/unkeep to Node. PhiNode has a proper compute() call. ProjNode ideal is a lot simpler. Region doesn't ever get a null. Move the mergeScopes Region peep till after all Phis are added. Type TOP and XCONTROL count as constants. TypeTuple gets a toString * #37 WIP Upate README * #37 WIP Region node should check if one of its inputs is a region that needs to be peepholed * #37 WIP If node should check if its ctrl input is a Region that has only 1 live input so can be peepholed * #37 WIP Further update to README to make the peephole logic clearer. Also discuss the relationship between Region and Phi nodes * Region removes dead input paths Remove region-folding in Return, If. Add a Makefile. Reformat triple-quote lines to be emacs-friendly. * StopNode idealize Return type sharpens to include control input. * Remove !=, >=, >; use Not and <, <=, == Fix bug mixing rotating different ops. Generalize Add fold constants; apply to Mul, EQ. Fix Div.copy * Fix bug rotating e.g. < or <= Peep is only valid for associative ops * #37 WIP Doc updates * Work over the Ch6 Readme Major issue: Region inputs align 1-to-1 with Phi inputs, but a Region can have zero to many Phis. When we lose a Region input (dead path), we need to lose the same inputs to each Phi - but we don't lose the Phis themselves, unless we're folding away down to the last live input. * Update chapter06/README.md Co-authored-by: Yichen Yan <oraluben@outlook.com> * Update chapter06/README.md Co-authored-by: Yichen Yan <oraluben@outlook.com> * #37 Backport type system changes to chapter 2 * #37 Backport type system changes to chapter 3 * #37 Backport type system changes to chapter 4 * #37 Backport type system changes to chapter 5 * #37 Merge chapter 5 updates from main. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | * Initial work on chapter 4. Updated language grammar for chapter 4 Enhanced Parser to implement comparison operators Parser now allows setting 'arg' as input parameter to program The StartNode now has a tuple as result with two values. We set up two projection nodes as output of Start - the first is bound to scope as '$ctrl' and second as 'arg'. Return node now obtains the ctrl input by looking up '$ctrl' in scope; thus it gets the projection node. Added TypeTuple - represents a tuple of values. This is the type of Start. Added BoolNode - for comparison operators. Added MultiNode - interface for nodes that generate tuple results. Start implements this interface. Added ProjNode - projections to extract values from Start node. Each projection takes a MultiNode and an index value. Initial writeup of chapter 4 in README. GraphVisualizer now searches node outputs as well to locate all nodes * Add TypeControl. The first member of Start's tuple is of TypeControl. Correct the projType() method * Quote port names in edges as unquoted $ctrl is not valid. Revise how we decide an edge is a control edge so that it works correctly for projections. * We used to compute initial type in Node but this is problematic for new node types such as ProjNode and BoolNode as the construction is not yet complete when Node calls compute(). So we have to move compute() call down to the sub type's constructor. Add some tests for comparison ops. * Describe the $ctrl name binding and how it represents the Ptri net model. Add a diagram to show why we need algebraic manipulation of expressions. * Implement a simplification for expressions such as (con1 + arg) + con2 -> arg + con3 con1 + (arg + con2) -> arg + con3 * Add diagram to show what the graph looks like post peephole * Explain projection nodes * Cleanup Chapter 4, add peepholes. Add like 6 peepholes. Replace the 2 prior ones with 1-liners. BoolNode: replace the switch with 6 1-line classes. Giant comment discussion on idealize() calling convention. TypeInteger shorten isTop and isBot, and use them instead of calling "equals()". * 2 more peeps, no tests yet * Cleanup Chapter 4 `peephole()` kills nodes killed by `idealize()` calls... and works recursively. This requires keeping "mid-peephole" nodes alive. The edge-swap code in Add and Mul now keeps their inputs alive mid-swap. MultiNode is a class, not an interface. Move the initial 'compute()' to peephole, instead of requiring each constructor to do it. Start and Constant remember their original types, even if the `_type` field changes. `kill()` flags nodes as DEAD. Print DEAD nodes with "DEAD". Change recursive `_print()` to a tik-tok style, so each individual print does not need to handle DEAD printing. This printing will soon need a "visit" bit to avoid infinite recursion. Projs pick up a debugging name. GraphViz: combine Multis and their Projs. Drop Constant inputs from Start. Fix coloring Control edges red. * minor WS cleanup * Cleaned up Node.peephole Use a smart DCE call after peephole. More comments. Tidy interfaces. * minor comment cleanup * But the proj nodes inside a table * No need to set column span on multi node as we put the proj nodes in a table * Update the dot diagrams * Rename method to make it more obvious to the reader * Start to add a description of peephole * Rename del() to delUse() and make it an instance method as it reads better that way. Add new method addUse() again to improve readability. Adjust removeDeadCode() to make the intention clear. * Update docs explaining how peephole works Update the diagrams * Fix errors * Add diagram to show what the graph looks like post peephole * 2 more peeps, no tests yet * Cleanup Chapter 4 `peephole()` kills nodes killed by `idealize()` calls... and works recursively. This requires keeping "mid-peephole" nodes alive. The edge-swap code in Add and Mul now keeps their inputs alive mid-swap. MultiNode is a class, not an interface. Make a final toString; require each Node to specify its special printing via label(). Add a recursing printer called print(); toString is used by default in the debugger and so cannot be recursive. Make the peephole rules based on a proper Type and idealize calls. Big comments about the Type computations. Every node picks up a _print, compute and idealize() call. Rename long arith ops Divide, UnaryMinus, Multiply, Subtract into shorter uniform-length names. Cleans up the parser where he does the precedence op parsing. Rework Parser: - Drop Token class, its all Strings except in the one place we know a number is coming - Embed the Lexer as a field in the Parser, instead of trying to pass it around everywhere in the Parser - StartNode becomes a read-only global, so we don't have to pass it around everywhere in the Parser AND optimizer. - Lexer matches on strings and returns strings. Match and consume *at the moment* instead of carrying around a current token/string and forcing the next-token after consuming the current one. - All parse subexpressions shrink by 1/2 after these changes. * Initial writeup of Chapter 2 * Initial writeup of Chapter 2 * Initial writeup of Chapter 2 * Initial writeup of Chapter 2 * Remove range * progress Chapter 2 Drop integer ranges. Broader lattice pic. Lots of prose changes in the readme. Fixed title in gviz dot generation. Fixed bug with peephole making redundant constants. * Implement compute for all the arithmetic node types Add a flag to switch off peephole so we can see the full graph Add post peephole graph to writeup * Implement compute for all the arithmetic node types Add a flag to switch off peephole so we can see the full graph Add post peephole graph to writeup * Fix bad path to the svg * Update pre-peephole diagram * Add dead code elimination ...and a set_def to proper update graph edges. * Update README.md * Cleanup the GraphVisualizer a bit. Update the graphs. Update the chapter list as chapter 3 deleted, and chapter 4 is now chapter 3. --------- Co-authored-by: Cliff Click <cliffc@acm.org>
* Overhaul LexerCliff Click2023-09-191-191/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | Switched to bytes from chars, since we'll be parsing files eventually and typically compilers parse bytes from files (and not Java chars). Added a 'peek' to handle bad leading `--123` numbers. Used simpler number parsing; doesn't do doubles (yet). Added a filter for punctuation. Prior setup didn't handle multi-char punctuation like relation tests "<=". Switched the "EOF" marker char from 0 to Char.MAX_VALUE; harder to make mistakes, and simplifies the WS test. Switch javadoc comments to plain comments on private functions. Added tests for broken keyword, broken numbers, negative numbers.

| | | | | | | | Updated README Added language module with grammar Split the code into common and chapter01 modules. Removed a number of utility classes that were imported from AA. Added github workflow file.
* In this initial commit, following are included:dibyendumajumdar2023-08-201-0/+174
| | | | | | | util classes from AA Lexer code extracted from the Parse class. This is all draft as likely to change as we start creating the AST parser.
